About the Race

Route building on the Bestmed Cycle4CANSA mountain-bike course has been carrying on unabatedly and the result is that the organisation can now proudly announce a new 50km single lap course for the 2019 edition of the popular mountain-bike race at Sun City.

The Bestmed Cycle4CANSA, presented by the Optimum Group, takes place on 24 and 25 August this year and the organisation is placing a major focus on the mountain-bike leg of proceedings, which takes place on Saturday, 24 August.
Trail sections inside the stunning Letsateng Game Reserve at Sun City have been vastly extended and there are some delightful new trails around the golf courses as well. Some more terrain on the Southern and Western side of the Sun City complex was also earmarked and now accommodates some great trails.

“Route building and cleaning started some time ago and it’s really come a long way. We look forward to elevating the route experience for our participants,” said race organiser Mauritz Meyer.

The added route options have led to a significant change this year with the 50km route consisting of a single lap offering a total of 690 metres vertical ascent. Riders won’t have to complete the 25km course twice as was the case in the past.
“The 25km course was popular, but there’s no denying that it became congested when the 50km riders did their second lap, and that detracted from rider experience.”

According to Meyer, riders in the 50km can look forward to a well-balanced new route experience.

The event starts off with open and fast riding for the first 9km and then heads into some interesting trails on Western side of Sun City. This section was last used in the event five years ago and was very popular.
The route runs onto the tarred road and accesses the complex gate at the top of the Lost City Golf Course. It races through the complex on the main artery tarred road before linking up with the Gary Player Golf Course at the back of the Cascades Hotel.

Mountain-bikers who have ridden the event in the past will know the golf course section, which traverses both the Lost City and Gary Player courses as well as some beautiful riding terrain above the Lost City Course.
Some newly built trails also feature on this section which haven’t been traversed by past editions of the event.

Then it’s onto the famous Letsateng Game Reserve where lots of new trails await following extensive trail building. The route leaves the best for last and the trail experience inside the Letsateng Reserve presents the perfect route climax before riders head past the Crocodile Park to finish next to the Sky Train.

“With the extension and new trails, the riding experience will be a lot less congested than in the past and it will allow us to scale the event and accommodate more riders,” said Meyer.

“With the new available terrain and trails the event now presents a true mountain-bikers course. We realised that, if we wanted to give the event the chance of growing, we needed to present a full 50km and not a two-lap course, so it’s quite a landmark moment for the event,” he said.

The complete updated route map is available on the event site www.cansalostcity.co.za.

Distances on offer are 10km, 25km and 50km and all riders receive free entry into the Valley of Waves on race day.

Riders can enter on-line at www.cansalostcity.co.za.

While the Saturday is focussed on mountain-biking, the Sunday’s Bestmed Cycle4CANSA Road Classic offers distances of 103km and 70km.

The road race route is fast and flat and has received stunning feedback following the return to the traditional route in 2016. Because it takes place on the Sunday the roads are quiet and perfectly suited to present a mass participation race in safe surroundings.

The Bestmed Cycle4CANSA is a premier seeding event for the Cape Town Cycle Tour and funds raised through the event are donated to the Cancer Association of South Africa.

The casino resort offers convenient and safe parking as well as a variety of family entertainment options once the racing is done, including free entry into the Valley of Waves.

A delightful and unintimidating 10km ride has been added to the entry options for the Saturday’s mountain-bike proceedings at the annual Bestmed Cycle4CANSA weekend, presented by the Optimum Group on 24 and 25 August at Sun City.

The 10km ride will take place in the Letsatseng Game Reserve and consists of only gravel roads with no technical difficulty, which makes the ride suitable as a family outing for all levels of mountain-bikers. Kids from the age of 8 can enter for the ride.

While the 10km completes an all-inclusive MTB offering over the weekend, big news on the classic 50km is imminent – an announced in this regard will be done later this week…
