Following a swift increase in the entry uptake for this year’s edition of the popular Bestmed Cycle4CANSA Championship, the organisation has advised that they will again enforce an entry limit of 4 000 riders for the road event and 1500 riders for the mountain-bike event.
Entries will close once the entry limits have been reached.
The Bestmed Cycle4CANSA Championship is presented by the Optimum Group at Sun City over the weekend of 24 and 25 August 2019. It’s widely regarded as the most complete weekend cycling festival in South Africa with mountain-bikers, road riders and kids catered for over the two days with various distance options.
“We have so many returning cyclists every year,” said race organiser Mauritz Meyer from the Hectic Promotions non-profit company. “Our statistics show that up to 90% of the field return the following year to take part again. It’s a wonderful weekend and it’s the cyclists themselves that make it special.
“I am mad about cyclists. They are such a positive bunch. Against the backdrop of the cancer awareness drive, this trademark is a key element to making the weekend a success.
“Every year scores of cyclists share their stories with me and it’s humbling to get a peek into the lives of cancer survivors and sufferers,” he said. Meyer has also been challenged by the illness and says he appreciates being a soundboard.
“The interest for this year’s edition is unprecedented and to ensure rider safety we are limiting entries to 4 000 riders for the road race and 1500 riders for the mountain-beg leg,” he said.
Riders who intend taking part in the event and don’t have their entries in yet are advised to visit the website to ensure they secure an entry – www.cansalostcity.co.za.
Since moving back to the original road race route three years ago, the Cycle4CANSA field has shown a steady increase every year. The move was made possible by presenting the road race on the Sunday instead of the Saturday during the weekend cycling festival.
“I’m sure everyone who took part last year will agree that the road surface throughout is quite simply amazing, especially the last 20kmcoming back to Sun City. It’s as smooth as you like!
“The smooth road surface coupled with the flat course makes Cycle4CANSA a perfect post winter ride. Only one slight undulation presents itself halfway through. The rest is pan flat,” said Meyer.
Sun City have put together special accommodation packages for the Friday and Saturday evening over race weekend which also include breakfast. More info on this is available on www.cansalostcity.co.za.
The Road Classic offers distances of 103km and 70km and takes place on Sunday, 25 August. The MTB Classic, which presents 25km and 50km route options, fills the Saturday slot (24 August) over the weekend cycling festival.
The Bestmed Cycle4CANSA Road Championship is a premier seeding event for the Cape Town Cycle Tour and proceeds from the event go to the Cancer Association of South Africa.
The casino resort offers convenient and safe parking as well as a variety of family entertainment options once the racing is done, including free entry into the Valley of Waves.
